Organ Donor Walk

On the 14th August, Laurie, my donor and I, together with our families and friends, took part in the Organ Donor Foundation 5km Walk on Durban’s beachfront to create awareness for the need of organ donors in KZN.

Organ Donor Walk

It was such a fun day out with such a positive feeling of hope and determination from all there showing their support for organ donation. We met transplant recipients, organ donors, those waiting for transplants and all their family and friends and it was amazing to see how many people in KZN are on the list and are needing organs. Makes you realise you are not alone fighting this fight.

Laurie very kindly made me us gorgeous tutus to prance around in with the rest of her tutu gang who came all the way from Empangeni to show their support. Thank you Ronnie, Maxine and Chantelle for coming all the way to Durban and walking with Laurie and I. You ladies rocked. Thank you for being such a support for Laurie.

Thanks to my Mum & Ray for being volunteers and helping out on the day. I know you were a big help and I appreciate you being there to assist the foundation.

The support received was amazing. It was so lovely to see so many people give up their Sunday morning for a cause that is very close to my heart. I was very proud of all my family and friends who came out to create the awareness KZN desperately needs. Thank you to all you for being there.

The turnout was really fantastic and apparently there were record number of organ donor sign ups as well as a record number of blood donations on the day. Yay! So awesome! So thank you KZN for making it such a successful event!

I encourage everyone to register as organ donors but its also very important to discuss the decision with your families. At the end of the day, they are the ones who make the final decision. We have a system of required consent in South Africa which means the family will be asked to give consent at the time of making the final call.

It costs nothing to register as an organ donor and is an extremely simple procedure. All you need to do is visit the Organ Donor Foundation website at http://www.odf.org.za or call them toll free: 0800 22 66 11 to register.
